Robert Curran - Biography
Robert joined Discovery Networks from Scout Productions, where he was Head of Production. In this role, Robert supervised the development and production of a full slate of television series including the Emmy Award-winning series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. In addition, Robert helped to develop Queer Eye for the Straight Girl, Knock First, Ding Dong Feng Shui and Space Race.
Before Scout Productions, Robert was with MGM Worldwide Television for nine years as the Vice President of Creative Affairs, where he was in charge of more than a dozen scripted network TV series, including the top-rated and long-running series, Stargate SG-1, The Magnificent Seven and The Outer Limits. He also was in charge of network TV movies and mini-series production, including the Emmy Award-winning films Twelve Angry Men, Inherit the Wind, That Championship Season and Peter Benchley’s CREATURE.
Earlier in his career, Robert created programming for the Children’s Television Workshop and Macmillan Publishing Company. At the Children’s Television Workshop, Robert wrote, produced and directed over 100 short films for an international version of The Electric Company, directing them on-location throughout the Middle East and North Africa. At Macmillan Publishing Company, Robert developed the concept and format for a series designed to teach English as a Second Language (ESL), called Family Album, U.S.A. He also was responsible for integrating the television, radio and basal text materials for the series, which was funded and distributed by the United States Information Agency (USIA) and the Voice Of America. Also at Macmillan, he developed projects with Project Literacy U.S. (PLUS) and ABC-TV.
Robert founded and was the first Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Film Office. He succeeded in bringing 40 film projects to the Western Pennsylvania region in just four years, including the Best Picture Academy Award-winner, The Silence of the Lambs. Other projects he supervised included Hoffa, Striking Distance, Lorenzo’s Oil, Bob Roberts, The Jacksons: An American Dream and Citizen Cohn.
Robert began his career in TV news, sports and live specials. From newscasts to feature film production, he has always endeavored to create programming that is unique, informative and entertaining. Regardless of whether it was writing scripts designed to help children learn to read, or creating a series that tells the story of real life cowboys, he has always applied the same core values to every position he’s held: audience focus, leadership, passion, performance, teamwork and a commitment to excellence.
Robert is a longtime member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a multiple Emmy Award winner and nominee, a David L. Lawrence Memorial Award winner, a Pro Board-certified volunteer firefighter, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Hazardous Materials Operations Level Responder and FEMA-certified for the National Incident Management System.

Robert Curran has been involved in just about every type of film and television production in his extensive career: feature films, scripted and unscripted television series, educational programming, TV movies, mini-series, news, sports, commercials and music videos. Prior to founding FIRE ENGINE Productions Inc, Robert was the Executive Vice President of Development at BASE Productions, producers of such hit series as the multiple Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, Crime 360, Last American Cowboy, Known Universe, Legend Quest and Haunted Highway. He was responsible for all creative development, managed the company’s development slate, pitched new show ideas to networks and supervised budgets, schedules and production plans for multiple projects. Robert helped increase the number of "sold" projects at BASE by more than 600%.
Before his work for BASE Productions, Robert was the Vice President of Development and Production at Discovery Networks International. He supervised all development and production for three international networks: Discovery Channel, Discovery Travel & Living and Discovery Home & Health. Robert’s role included heading up Discovery's Global Development Group, an international development team responsible for creating original programming concepts worldwide. The results were numerous highly rated, award-winning factual and lifestyle series and specials, including two-time Emmy-nominated Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie, USIFV Festival Grand Prix Award, One World Award and Aurora Award-winning Battle of Chernobyl, USIFV Festival Silver Screen Award-winner The Smith's Hotels for Two, Rise of the Videogame, Reel Race and One Step Beyond.
